Myrtle M. Smith

December 8, 1932 — November 13, 2016

Myrtle Marie (Woods) Smith, 83, of Kirksville, Missouri, formerly of Memphis passed away Sunday afternoon, November 13, 2016, at the Northeast Regional Medical Center, at Kirksville, Missouri.

The daughter of Louie E. and Edith Belle (Rorabaugh) Woods, she was born December 8, 1932 in Scotland County, Missouri.

She attended Robinson rural school. She and her siblings rode their horses to school every day.

After graduating from the rural school she rode a horse to meet the bus and attended Scotland County R-1 formerly known as the Memphis High School.  They left their horses so that they could ride back home after getting off the bus.

She graduated from the Memphis High School with the class of 1950 and worked at George Haley's Diner.  It was there that she met her future husband H. Craig Smith.

On April 10, 1955, attended by Bill Haley and Irene Woods Keller, they got married and to this union, two children were born: Debra A. and David C.   April 10th happened to be on Easter that year, something that Craig never forgot.

Myrtle helped Craig in the field and chased cattle and hogs. When David became old enough to help he took over those tasks and she volunteered at the recently opened Scotland County Memorial Hospital. This blossomed into a full time job in the OB/GYN Department.  She loved taking care of "her" babies.

She always enjoyed mowing the yard with a riding lawn mower and crocheting especially afghans.

Survivors include her children: Debra of Kirksville, Missouri and David of Gentry, AR; two grandchildren: Jason (Becky) Shelton of Bloomfield, IN and Kaylene (John) Campbell of Sulphur Springs, AR; eight great-grandchildren: Christina, Aaron, Colton and Allisa Campbell, Dillon, Trevor, Jaxson and Evalynn Shelton; her sisters: Lerea (Larry) Bloomfield of Arbela and Linda (Phil) Hicks of Danville, IA, a sister-in-law, Helen Mallett of Anamosa, IA and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death is her husband, H. Craig, her parents, a sister, Velma Lou Van Baalen, a brother, Vern Woods, her daughter-in-law, Crystal Smith, a nephew, Terry Wayne Van Baalen and two brother-in-laws, Russell Van Baalen and John Mallett. Please sign the guest register.
