Emmett Murl Phillips, age 83, of Memphis, Missouri son of Vernie Boyd and Rue Mina (Corwin) Phillips was born March 5, 1936 near Bible Grove, Missouri. He resided in the Scotland County, Missouri area all his life. He attended grade school at Frogge and graduated Bible Grove High School in 1954. He was a member of the Bible Grove Church of Christ. After high school graduation, he attended trade school in Kansas City, MO. He was inducted into the Army and spent 19 months in Germany. A month after his discharge, he married his high school sweetheart, Evelyn Maxine Newcomb, on Easter Sunday, April 2, 1961, at the Bible Grove Church of Christ. Unto this union, four children were born.
Emmett farmed for several years and later started working as an over the road truck driver. He enjoyed his occupations, but his greatest joy was his family. He was a great nurturer and encourager. His unique laugh, ever present smile and friendly wave will be missed. He had a passion for gardening and cooking. He and Maxine spent many hours in the garden planting, weeding, and harvesting vegetables followed by hours of canning so that they could share the bounty with their friends, neighbors, kids and grandkids. Emmett was well known for his hot rolls, his angel food and Mexican fruit cakes, and hot cocoa. When the opportunity and health allowed, Emmett and Maxine frequently traveled to visit their children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends and at the local Senior Nutrition center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother (in infancy) Venus Dale Phillips, a sister Reta Violet Kittle, and grandson Jesse Waylon Phillips.
Emmett is survived by his wife of 58 years, Maxine Phillips, son Greg (Valerie) Phillips of Seligman, Missouri; daughters, Gayla (David) Tabor of Jefferson City, MO; Greta (Rick) Slocum of Albia, Iowa, and Glenna (Chris) Maxwell of Macedonia, Illinois; Grandchildren: Trevor (Monique) Hudson, Emery (Terri) Phillips, Lindi (Vidal) Jovel, Page Phillips, Jurden Phillips, Angel Grace Flick, Hannah (fiancée Jeremy Parker) Tabor, Drew Tabor, Wade Slocum, Kate Slocum, Adrianna Maxwell, and Maddi Jo Maxwell.
